Distracted

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. — Romans 8:38-39

I seem to be all over the place lately! I can’t finish “a” book because I’m reading four books at once. I have at least ten pieces of writing in the works, and ten more ideas in my head. I feel like my brain is going in five directions and I’m incapable of choosing just one.
This is surprising to me because I’m usually a pretty focused person. I follow my to-do-list and the items get checked off. Appointments are on the calendar and reminders set on the cell phone. Even my back-ups have a back-up. But nevertheless, instead of one song stuck in my head, it’s a medley! Why I am I so distracted?
Do you ever have a season like this? I sure hope so, as it would make me feel a whole lot better! Perhaps I’m getting reacquainted with the person I was in a previous season. I remember clearly the twenty-something Colleen who was a lot more spontaneous! She could drop everything at a moments notice to meet a friend for coffee, plan a dinner party, or make a quick run to the library before the book’s overdue.
But life has a way of dulling the sparkle of spontaneity. Parenthood, work and adulting create a list of responsibilities that, if ignored, could have negative consequences. These are things that require our time and attention. But these are the things God uses to teach me His lessons and guide my footsteps through every season.
Lesson One: Don’t label things. It’s not that spontaneity is “good” and being focused is “bad” or vice versa. These two characteristics are not enemies, but simply different. They can both have a place in my life.
Lesson Two: There are a variety of seasons in this lifetime, each requiring a specific set of skills, gifts, and strengths to suit that particular season. In God’s unwavering love for us, He provides exactly what we need, when we need it.
As for me, I’ve decided to embrace my current crazy and give myself permission to explore. It’s okay to read four books concurrently. It’s okay to have a medley of songs playing in my head. If I can embrace this temporary juggling act, perhaps you can too. Remember, God moves mountains, parts waters and heals hearts. Nothing can separate you from His love!
Points to Ponder
● What kind of season are you currently experiencing?
● What is God teaching you at this time?
